How to Make a Christmas Wish List: A Simple Guide for Families in Finland

Christmas gift-giving gets complicated quickly. Grandparents ask what the kids want, aunts and uncles want something useful, and somewhere along the way three people buy the same board game. A Christmas wish list solves this. You write down what you would actually like, share one link, and everyone who wants to give you something can pick a gift and mark it as reserved, so nobody buys the same thing twice.

This guide shows how to build a Christmas wish list that works, whether it is just for you or for the whole family.

  • What to put on a Christmas wish list
  • How to set up a list for yourself or a whole family
  • How to share it without spoiling the surprise
  • How to say thank you afterwards

Start with who the list is for

Decide first whether the list is only for you or for several people. A list just for you is quick to set up and works well for adults who want to keep their own gifts a surprise. A family list gives each person their own section, so grandparents can see at a glance what each child and adult is hoping for.

On Wishper you choose "Just me" or "My family" when you create the list. With "My family" you add everyone's first name or nickname. A first name or nickname is enough; there is no need to use full names.

What to include

A good Christmas list has a mix. Four simple groups work for most people:

Tips for a list that works

Keeping the surprise

The best part of Christmas is not knowing. There are two ways to protect it.

If the list is just for you, turn on Surprise Mode. It hides who reserved what from your own notifications and screens, so you stay in the dark until you choose to look.

If the list is for the whole family, each person can have their own "Hide reservations from me" switch. That way a parent can hide the gifts reserved for themselves while still seeing what has been reserved for everyone else, which helps avoid double buying.

A note about sharing: the public link looks the same to everyone who opens it, and it shows items as Reserved so guests do not buy the same thing. That means a child who opens the link can see what has been taken in their section. If you want children to see nothing, simply do not share the public link with them, and send it only to the adults. On a family list, each person can also get their own private link to add their own wishes.

How to share your list

Send the link in the family group chat, in your Christmas card message, or by email. Do it early: the weeks before Christmas fill up quickly, and parcels need time to arrive. Guests do not need an account. They open the link, choose a gift and mark it as reserved with their name and email.

After Christmas

Use the Gift Tracker to see what was given and by whom, unless you used Surprise Mode or hid a person's reservations. Mark gifts as thanked as you write your thank-you messages, so nobody is forgotten. Private personal links on a family list switch themselves off about 60 days after the list date, so nothing stays open longer than needed.
